How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?

Thirty is the maximum Instagram accepts, and a post carrying more is rejected rather than trimmed. Whether you should use thirty is a different question: Instagram has said publicly that a small number of genuinely relevant tags works better than a wall of loose ones. Treat 30 as the ceiling and pick the tags that actually describe the post — a mix of five broad, ten mid and five specific will out-perform thirty scattered ones in most niches.

What is the difference between broad and specific hashtags?

Breadth, and it changes how long you stay visible. A broad tag like #fitness has an enormous audience and a new post arriving every second, so yours is near the top for moments. A specific tag like #homegymsetup has a fraction of the audience, nearly all of whom are looking for exactly that, and your post can sit near the top for days. Broad tags are a lottery ticket; specific tags are a queue you can actually reach the front of. Mixing them is the point — the broad ones for the occasional big reach, the specific ones for the follows that stay.

Why does YouTube only show three hashtags?

YouTube displays the first three hashtags from your description above the video title, and that is the only place they appear to a viewer. It also ignores every hashtag on a video that carries more than fifteen — not the excess, all of them. YouTube is the one platform where adding more tags makes things measurably worse, which is why this tool suggests three to five there and stops well short of the limit.

Do hashtags still get you reach?

Less than they did, and not in the way most guides imply. Instagram and TikTok both rank primarily on how people behave with a post — watch time, completion, saves, shares — and hashtags are closer to a filing system than a lever. What they still do reliably is put you in front of people who deliberately search or follow a specific tag, which is why the specific tier is worth more than its size suggests. Anyone promising that a particular hashtag set will make a post go viral is selling something.

Can hashtags get my account restricted?

Tags associated with spam or with content that breaks the platform rules do get restricted, and posts carrying them can lose reach quietly, with no notification. The lists here avoid that category, but they are not a compliance check and platforms change what they restrict without publishing it. Two habits protect you more than any list: use tags that genuinely describe the post, and do not paste the same block of thirty onto everything you publish.
